Today is the FIRST day of Autumn. Fall has officially begun, and in the corporate world, it’s more than just pumpkins and Halloween. Corporate business often picks up this time of year, as we work to catch up after summer vacations, and make sure we’re on schedule before winter holidays and end of year deadlines. Looming deadlines and increasing workloads may be on your mind constantly, and early mornings that lead into long days in your office can put a damper on your fall spirit.
Don’t stress! I’ve compiled a list of things to help you adjust and get into the swing of the Fall work season.
Organization is key.
Making sure your workspace is neat and organized is such an important aspect of keeping yourself both positive and productive. Folders and Binders are helpful in keeping all of your information in one place, but there’s something that many people seem to be forgetting: Labels, Labels, Labels. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be stuck looking through papers in a folder, trying to find that one paper. By making sure everything you own is organized with labels, you can eliminate this stress as a whole. You can go with simple labels, or use lots of subcategories, the possibilities are endless, whatever it takes to make sure you can find the thing you need as quickly as possible.
Save the date!
Time management is often the key to meeting deadlines. If you don’t already utilize a calendar, we highly recommend a weekly calendar with plenty of space on each workday. It’s important not just to keep track of work meetings, Zoom calls, conference calls, and big deadlines, but also smaller deadlines and milestones to keep you on track to meeting the larger ones. The more details, the better, so we recommend everything you must be informed of on that date. It’s also beneficial to include personal events on your work calendar, or keep your work calendar alongside your personal calendar, so you can effectively manage your time and your work life balance. Kids soccer game or doctors appt? Mark it down.
Keeping your work calendar on top of your calendar or in the same space will give you a better understanding of how your week is going. If you see that you have to be at your daughter’s dance recital at 7 on Tuesday and you have a big workload, you might want to put in the extra hours on Monday to ensure you can finish in time. Planning ahead will help you keep a clearer headspace, knowing that you won’t be missing out on anything. Whether your prefer a digital or written calendar is up to you and your preferences, and we recommend using whichever is going to be the easiest for you to use consistently.
