June 1, 2024, marks the perfect day for your adventurous side to come out; it’s National Trails Day! Organized by the American Hiking Society, it is a day to celebrate the wonderful trails and scenery that our country has to offer. Events such as hikes, bike rides, horseback rides, paddling trips, bird-watching clubs, geocaching competitions, gear demonstrations, and stewardship projects will be held throughout the United States in celebration of National Trails Day this year. Wellness is all the rage!

The exciting thing about National Trails Day is that individuals can use the American Hiking Society website to find an event near them…or they can sponsor their own event and add it to the website’s event database. So, if you’re a gutsy leader, find a park near you and get to work; there is always something that can be done to help preserve the resources available to us. The sky is the limit for your event! Just be sure to register online so that others can join you in the celebration of your local wonder. If you’re the less adventurous type, there is bound to be an event around you that would be happy to have your help and participation.

Let local trails encourage you to be healthy!   The American Hiking Society “recognizes that foot trails and hiking are essential to connect people with nature, conserve open space, provide biological corridors for diverse plants and wildlife, and for the health of Americans and our natural environment.”

As summer approaches, days like National Trails Day are perfect for exploring new ways of becoming active—both physically and in your community. Find a new trail, pack a healthy picnic, enjoy fresh air, and commit to a healthier lifestyle!
